Валютная система, в которой стандартная денежная единица разделена на 100 частей. Большинство стран ввело валюту, базирующуюся на десятичной системе, вслед за США, где она появилась в 1792 г. Однако в Великобритании переход на десятичную денежную систему произошел в соответствии с рекомендациями, высказанными в 1961 г. Хейлсберрийским комитетом, лишь 15 февраля 1971 г.
В настоящее время в Великобритании обращаются восемь десятичных монет достоинством 1 пенни, 2 пенса, 5 пенсов, 10 пенсов, 20 пенсов, 50 пенсов, 1 фунт стерлингов (появилась в 1983 г.) и 2 фунта стерлингов (появилась в 1989 г.). Для облегчения перехода с валютной системы, основанной на делении денежной единицы на 240 частей, к системе с делением денежной единицы на 100 частей была выпущена монета достоинством 1/2 пенни, однако в 1984. г. от нее отказались.
